Job 23: 3,8-10
If only I knew where to find him; if only I could go to his dwelling!
But if I go to the east, he is not there; if I go to the west, I do not find him.
When he is at work in the north, I do not see him; when he turns to the south, I catch no glimpse of him.
But he knows the way that I take; when he has tested me, I will come forth as gold.
Job knows what it’s like to have silence from God – a long waiting period– and to feel like He isn’t there. He is honest about how that makes him feel. But he also knows these things:
1) God IS there even though he can’t see Him (as evidenced by “at work” and “he turns”). He never says that God doesn’t exist, he only admits that God is not in his finite view. There is an underlying faith that somewhere out there, God is working.
2) In verse 10 “But He knows the way that I take…”, Job is acknowledging that when I can’t see God, it is enough that HE sees ME. He is Jehovah El Roi – the God who sees!
3) Job knows that his present reality has a beginning, middle, and mercifully, an END. The statement “I will come forth as gold” is his commitment to never give up.
My prayer today: God fill us with the faith of Job in the waiting seasons of life! Thank you that you see us and are always at work, even in ways we can’t see.
We trust you! Fill us with faith even as we wait.
